Tekken: Blood Vengeance Review

Posted on February 18, 2012 at 7:25 AM Comments comments (0)

I was never good at fighting games, in fact, I get thrashed regularly in Marvel VS Capcom 3, but my favorite fighting series has always been Tekken. The first game was released back in 1994,  and,  since then, it has been a major competitor in the fighting-game world. Ten games have been released so far, with five more planned for the next few years, including two massive crossover games with Street Fighter. Add to that 3 feature length movies, which have left quite a lot to be desi...

Tekken

The Tekken games are popular within the martial arts community thanks primarily to the fact that most of the characters' fighting techniques can be found in real life martial arts. However, there are questions as to the accuracy of the style labels ascribed to certain characters. For example, in previous releases of the game, the character Paul Phoenix is listed accurately as fighting using integrated martial arts based on judo, despite judo not generally allowing punching and kicking, especially in competition. Similarly, the character Marshall Law is listed as being a practitioner of "martial arts", which is not a specific discipline. Similarities exist between Marshall Law and Bruce Lee, including their fighting style, Jeet Kune Do as well as appearance.

The misunderstanding concerning Marshall Law's "martial arts" is commonly attributed to the fact that in the manual for the American PlayStation release of Tekken 2, the translator for the manual missed a small pun where Marshall Law practiced 'Marshall arts', a reference to his own name. Other Tekken characters also draw heavily from real life action heroes, such as Lei Wulong and Craig Marduk, video game analogues of Jackie Chan, and large wrestlers/mixed martial artists, such as Bill Goldberg, Nathan Jones, and Bob Sapp. Namco themselves have stated that the styles in Tekken are not supposed to accurately represent real styles, but merely give the impression of them. Paul Phoenix, King (albeit through two different identities), Nina Williams, Yoshimitsu and Heihachi Mishima have been playable characters in all Tekken games, while Lei Wulong first appeared as a playable character in Tekken 2 and has since shown up in all subsequent games. Kazuya Mishima and Lee Chaolan are playable characters in all Tekken games with the exception of Tekken 3, which Kazuya only appears or is mentioned in various cinematic. Anna Williams is playable in all Tekken games except Tekken 4. A member of the Law and Chang family have also been playable in every Tekken game.

Apart from Yoshimitsu, Heihachi Mishima and Lars Alexandersson, there are many crossovers between Tekken and the Soul series, such as King's mask available for custom characters in Soul Calibur III, and Ivy's hairstyle for Anna in Tekken 5. Yoshimitsu and Heihachi, being originally Tekken characters, obtained many new moves when brought to the Soul series. In later Tekken games, some of these attacks were added to their moves lists. Lars will appear in Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 as a special guest character.

Street Fighter X Tekken

Street Fighter X Tekken (pronounced Street Fighter Cross Tekken) is an upcoming crossover fighting game being developed by Capcom. The game was announced at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con International by Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono. The game is set to release for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.

The game will feature characters from both the Street Fighter and Tekken series. As the game is being made by Capcom, with Namco being involved more in the licensing of the Tekken cast, the gameplay will be based on the 2D mechanics of Street Fighter IV as opposed to Tekken, and will feature projectile moves such as the hadouken. The demo shown at the San Diego Comic-Con showed characters Ryu and Kazuya Mishima fighting each other, being tagged by Street Fighter's Chun-Li and Tekken's Nina Williams. The characters were shown performing tag team super combos that combined their partner's attacks, similar to those in Street Fighter EX3.

Prior to tournament EVO 2010 at Las Vegas, Nevada, producer Yoshinori Ono was teasing a yet announced game which were initially believed to be a new Darkstalkers entry. Before EVO 2010's Super Street Fighter IV finals, Ono was confronted by Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada on stage after teasing more of the game that would officially be announced at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con International.

During the Super Street Fighter IV panel at Comic-Con, Harada appeared out of the crowd and went towards the stage while handing out free copies of Tekken 6, which was met with cheers and boos. Ono and Harada then confirmed the existence of Street Fighter X Tekken. Both the teaser trailer and early gaming footage of Street Fighter X Tekken was also shown at Comic-Con.

During the announcement, Harada also revealed that he has a related project under way, which is being developed by Namco. As Namco is in charge of production of this game, the gameplay will be similar to that of Tekken.

This is not the first time Namco and Capcom have made a game together as they released a Japan-only crossover game in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 titled Namco × Capcom. However, this game did not exclusively consist of characters from the Street Fighter universe and Tekken universe, but instead included various characters from the entire Capcom universe and entire Namco universe. Namco × Capcom was a role-playing game, thus making Tekken X Street Fighter and Street Fighter X Tekken the first games in the fighting game genre to be made by Namco and Capcom.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is the next currently planned installment of the Tekken fighting game series. The game is the second game in the series to have a focus on Tag team battles rather than one-on-one battles.

The game was officially announced on September 18, 2010 at the Tougeki event by the creator Katsuhiro Harada. He had previously mentioned the game during a speech at the conference The Legend of Tekken in Madrid in May 2010, but having only said they were 'working on the next Tekken', magazine writers and fans alike had erroneously believed he was talking about Tekken 7. Harada later cleared up the confusion on his Twitter page See here.

The gameplay engine and style are closely based on Tekken 6 (but uses an upgraded engine as confirmed in an official Tekken interview) and expands on the Tag mechanics featured in the first Tekken Tag, allowing for extended tag combos and combined moves.

It will be released in the Japanese arcades during Summer 2011, while the release dates for other regions, as well as console versions, have yet to be announced. At the World Cyber Games 2010 Harada hinted that the upcoming console version might feature additional console-exclusive returning characters and bonus gameplay modes. Also on Twitter, Harada suggested that the release of the console version of game would take place between the releases of Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter.

On the 6th of November 2010 a testplay video was released to show fans the Tag system. The are walls on the Practice mode but can be disabled. From Harada's own words "You can now have 3 characters on screen so you can hold them up and have another character attack them and if the timings right you can escape". Harada said he has a lot of ideas for this game like escaping from attacks, holds, and breaking through walls like in Tekken 6. The following characters were in the testplay and have all been announced as playable character: Marshall Law, Paul, Armor King II, and King II. Recently after on Harada's Twitter page, he announced that Steve Fox, Devil Jin and Julia Chang would be present in the game. Since then, Alisa Bosconovitch, Anna Williams, Baek Doo San, Eddy Gordo, Ganryu, Ling Xiaoyu, Nina Williams, Lee Chaolan, a young Heihachi Mishima and a unknown fighter.

The roster is over half complete as 30 Characters have been confirmed.
